The newest video to join the #MalariaMustDie campaign features an animation narrated by the actor Hugh Laurie. This video lays out the amazing progress the world has made in the fight against malaria, and the critical importance of continued investment to end this deadly epidemic.
Since its founding in 2002, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has distributed 795 million insecticide-treated nets to prevent malaria infections. And since 2000, the overall global malaria mortality rate has decreased by nearly half: From more than 860,000 malaria deaths per year to an estimated 445,000 deaths in 2016.
But in order to defeat malaria and prevent backsliding, the United States must continue to invest in the Global Fund and the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI). The President’s proposed cut to the Global Fund in his FY 2019 budget request would have a severe impact on the fight against malaria, translating to 26 million fewer insecticide-treated nets distributed to protect families from mosquitoes carrying the disease. With so much hard-won progress to date, now is not the time to take our foot off the pedal for global health investments.
