Friends Welcomes Recommitment to Ending HIV, TB and Malaria epidemics

in G7 Leaders’ and Health Ministers’ Communique

Washington, D.C. – Friends of the Global Fight welcomes a recommitment to ending the HIV, TB and malaria epidemics, as well as further support for the Global Fund’s seventh replenishment, in the 2023 G7 Health Ministers’ Communique released Sunday. The ministers also released a Universal Health Coverage Action Plan.

“The health ministers’ communique is an important reaffirmation of global support for the Sustainable Development Goal of ending the HIV, TB and malaria epidemics, and for the essential role of the Global Fund. We also welcome language in the communique that emphasizes the synergies of the Global Fund and other current programming with pandemic preparedness and border access to healthcare ,” said Chris Collins, the president and CEO of Friends. “Thank you to the Biden administration for its leadership and unflagging efforts to ensure global health is a priority at the G7.”

The G7 Health Ministers’ Meeting was held on May 13-14 in Nagasaki, Japan, ahead of the official G7 summit starting later this week in Hiroshima.

“The G7 commitment sends a powerful message,” said Jeff Sturchio, Friends’ Board chair and past chairman and CEO of Rabin Martin, a global health impact consultancy. “At a time when the future of the global health architecture is being debated, it is extremely valuable to see an emphasis on finding synergies in global programs in pursuit of universal health coverage and pandemic preparedness.”
