Friends applauds president’s budget request of $2 billion for the Global Fund
Washington, DC – Friends of the Global Fight applauds President Biden for requesting $2 billion for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in fiscal year 2024.
“We are grateful to the Biden administration for its steadfast commitment to ending the AIDS, TB and malaria epidemics,” said Chris Collins, president and CEO of Friends of the Global Fight. “U.S. leadership is a significant reason why we saw major donors, including the majority of G7 countries, substantially increase their pledges to the Global Fund at last year’s fundraising conference even in the midst of multiple global crises. We look forward to working with Congress to ensure that the $2 billion requested by President Biden for fiscal year 2024 becomes law.”
The Biden administration hosted the Global Fund’s seventh replenishment conference in New York last year, pledging $6 billion over three years. “The fiscal 2024 budget request again demonstrates American commitment to the Global Fund and will encourage additional pledges toward the current replenishment round,” Collins said. Friends also supports the highest possible support for essential U.S. bilateral global health programs including the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) and the tuberculosis program at USAID.
“A $2 billion appropriation for the Global Fund is projected to return $31 for every $1 invested and avert more than 450 million infections or cases, while also reducing global inequality,” said Dr. Jeffrey L. Sturchio, Friends’ Board chair and past chairman and CEO of Rabin Martin, a global health strategy consulting firm. “This investment will have a phenomenal real-life impact, saving millions of lives – but only if Congress acts. “
