FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
United Kingdom Pledges £1 Billion to the Global Fund, Advancing the Fight Against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria
Statement from Friends of the Global Fight President Deborah Derrick
Washington, D.C., September 23, 2013 — I am delighted to see today’s landmark pledge of £1 billion (approximately $1.6 billion) from the United Kingdom to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the world’s largest public health financier. This announcement helps better position the world to control these three epidemics — and it sends a powerful signal to other donors as the Global Fund’s Fourth Replenishment conference approaches later this year.
At the upcoming conference, the Global Fund will invite international donors to make multiyear commitments to the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. With continued investment, we have the potential to remove these diseases as public health threats in our lifetimes.
The commitment made by the British government comes on the heels of an historic pledge of $750 million to the Global Fund from the Nordic countries, announced earlier this month. These nations join others — including the United States, France and Germany — who have stepped forward this year with robust support for the Global Fund. I look forward to seeing additional donors come to the table as Replenishment approaches.
Today’s announcement further cements the legacy of British leadership in building a healthier, more stable and more secure world. The governments of the United States and the United Kingdom have been essential allies in the fight to improve global health, both through their own programs and through their steadfast support for the Global Fund.
The people of the United Kingdom can take great pride in this pledge. Its impact will be felt around the world for years — both by encouraging other donors to come forward, and through the lifesaving treatment, prevention and care it will support for people in need.
