Statement from Friends of the Global Fight on Departing USAID Administrator Dr. Rajiv Shah

Washington, D.C., February 19, 2015 — As Dr. Rajiv Shah steps down from his role as Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Friends of the Global Fight Against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria offers our sincere appreciation for his legacy of lifesaving international development efforts. We are grateful for his close partnership with multilateral organizations such as the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and his leadership in the fight against these three diseases.

Since assuming the role of Administrator in 2009, Dr. Shah has worked tirelessly on global development priorities, including eradicating extreme poverty and ending preventable child and maternal deaths. His work to advance the United States’ global development priorities builds on his career of championing global health. While at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Dr. Shah managed a $1.5 billion commitment to the Vaccine Fund and helped to transform the global system of vaccine financing through securing $5 billion for the International Finance Facility for Immunization, a concept he developed.

Under Administrator Shah’s leadership, bilateral global health programs overseen and implemented by USAID —including those in HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria — saw impressive gains, saving and improving millions of lives around the globe. He also has been critical to fostering strong coordination between USAID and the Global Fund. Throughout his tenure, USAID has worked closely with the Global Fund Secretariat to leverage resources and promote country coordination among the two organizations. This collaboration includes not only the provision of USAID technical resources, but also active involvement in Country Coordinating Mechanisms, the country-led committees that ensure grants management and implementation is efficient and effective.

Today, the global community has a historic opportunity to seize new advances in science and apply decades of practical experience in order to remove HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria as threats to public health. Administrator Shah’s contributions to this fight cannot be underestimated. Friends extends our best wishes and deepest thanks to Dr. Shah and we look forward to continued, strong collaboration between the Global Fund and USAID as, together, we work to defeat the three diseases.

Friends of the Global Fight works to end the worldwide burden of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. We educate, engage and mobilize U.S. decision makers to support the Global Fund, the world’s largest public health financier. For more information about Friends of the Global Fight, visit
