Statement from Friends President Deborah Derrick on PEPFAR Evaluation Release

Washington, D.C., February 20, 2013 — “As requested by Congress, an independent committee of experts through the Institute of Medicine (IOM) today released a comprehensive evaluation of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

Friends of the Global Fight looks forward to reviewing the analysis and recommendations in detail. The report articulates key opportunities moving forward, recognizing the work that still lies ahead. We are pleased to see such an exhaustive report delivering well-deserved praise for PEPFAR’s work to-date and highlighting the need to sustain — and build upon — recent gains.

PEPFAR has touched countless lives, both through its own bilateral programs, as well as through support for the multilateral Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Together PEPFAR and the Global Fund account for more than 90% of donor funding for HIV control in the world’s highest disease burden and lowest resourced countries.

Both the Global Fund and PEPFAR were designed as emergency responses to the HIV/AIDS epidemic a decade ago. This report highlights PEPFAR’s dynamic nature, emphasizing the initiative’s ongoing transition to a sustainable tool for improving global health. The Global Fund has recently undertaken its own transformation process, further enhancing its ability to support lifesaving work worldwide. Friends is delighted to see both institutions constantly improving — individually and in partnership — and positioning themselves to battle this epidemic into the future.”

Friends of the Global Fight works to end the worldwide burden of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. We educate, engage and mobilize U.S. decision makers to support the Global Fund, the world’s largest public health financier. For more information about Friends of the Global Fight, visit
