GLOBAL FUND ALLOCATED $825 MILLION IN HOUSE APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE’S FY2011 BILL
Washington, D.C., June 30, 2010 — The House Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs approved $825 million for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria today. If approved by the full House and Senate, this funding, along with the $300 million requested by President Barack Obama in the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies budget would provide a total of $1.125 billion to the Global Fund for fiscal year 2011, the single largest contribution to the Global Fund to date.
“It is extraordinary that in these very difficult economic times, the leaders in the House remain committed to the significant work of the Global Fund,” said Natasha Bilimoria, President of Friends of the Global Fight Against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, an organization that advocates on behalf of the Global Fund in the U.S. “Thanks to the critical bipartisan leadership of the many members that support the Global Fund — in particular, Chairwoman Nita Lowey (D-NY), Ranking Member Kay Granger (R-TX), Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) — the Global Fund has a chance to build on the significant health achievements already made and the millions of lives saved.”
The Global Fund’s latest results, released earlier this month, show that the organization remains the single-most powerful tool in the fight against the three diseases, responsible for approximately two-thirds of funds spent on malaria and tuberculosis worldwide, as well as half of all funding to treat AIDS patients. To date, Global Fund-supported programs treated 7 million people for tuberculosis, distributed 122 million insecticide-treated nets to prevent malaria infection and put 2.8 million people on HIV/AIDS treatment.
“The House subcommittee, led by Chairwoman Lowey and Ranking Member Granger, is doing the right thing by reaffirming its commitment to the Global Fund,” Ms. Bilimoria said. “Every dollar spent by the U.S. on the Global Fund leverages $2 from other nations, so we will work hard to ensure that the full House and Senate support and approve this essential investment in global health and development.”
