FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Statement from Friends of the Global Fight President Deborah Derrick
Washington, D.C., July 9, 2015 —The Senate Appropriations Committee approved its Fiscal Year (FY) 2016 appropriations bill for the Department of State, foreign operations, and related programs. The bill provides $1.35 billion for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, approximately $244 million above the President’s FY 2016 budget request.
“Friends applauds the important work and leadership of the members and staff of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs, most notably Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Ranking Member Patrick Leahy (D-VT),” said Friends President Deb Derrick. “The $8.47 billion allocated to the U.S. Department of State and USAID for global health shows the Senate remains steadfast in its work to continue fighting global epidemics, especially in the current fiscally-constrained environment.”
The bill also includes: $5.67 billion for Department of State-funded HIV/AIDS programs, a majority of which will fund the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR); $669.5 million for the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI); and $236 million for bilateral programs that fight tuberculosis.
U.S. investments in the Global Fund help leverage billions of additional dollars from foreign governments, foundations and the private sector. As the largest multilateral investor in HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria prevention and treatment, the Global Fund works closely with U.S. programs including PEPFAR and PMI to strategically invest for greater impact in the fight against these diseases. Significant successes have been achieved by previous investments, creating an opportunity to defeat these epidemics once and for all, but progress can be lost without continued, robust funding.
