FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Friends of the Global Fight and the Global Fund Welcome the Nomination of Dr. Eric Goosby as Global AIDS Coordinator
Washington, D.C., April 28, 2009 – Late yesterday, the White House announced the nomination of Dr. Eric Goosby as U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator. Upon confirmation to this post, Dr. Goosby will oversee the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
“Dr. Goosby brings a deep knowledge of AIDS treatment and care, as well as experience working within the U.S. government,” said Friends of the Global Fight Executive Director Natasha Bilimoria. “With all that PEPFAR has accomplished and what remains to be done, this kind of expertise is critical. Friends of the Global Fight and the Global Fund look forward to working together to meet the challenges ahead with Dr. Goosby and the Administration.”
PEPFAR and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria enjoy a complementary and supportive relationship. Through strong coordination in PEPFAR’s 15 focus countries, the two organizations have successfully ensured that resources have been used efficiently and effectively. The two programs work closely together, coordinating at every level including the highest levels in Geneva, Switzerland, and Washington, DC; between agencies at the staff level; and in the field among in-country partners. To date, the two programs combined have placed more than 3.5 million people on ARV treatment.
“Over the past six years, PEPFAR’s important work has helped to improve the health of millions of people around the world,” said Dr. Michel Kazatchkine, Executive Director of the Global Fund. “Through PEPFAR, the U.S. government has demonstrated critical global health leadership. I am sure that Dr. Goosby will continue PEPFAR’s strong collaboration with the Global Fund, and I look forward to working with him to strengthen the ties between our organizations.”
