FRIENDS OF THE GLOBAL FIGHT WELCOMES FIRST-EVER SENATE WORKING GROUP ON MALARIA
Friends of the Global Fight applauds Senators Russ Feingold (D-WI) and Roger Wicker (R-MS) for launching the first-ever Senate Working Group on Malaria. The bipartisan Senate Working Group is designed to help raise awareness and support efforts to combat this deadly disease.
“Malaria kills approximately one million people every year, most of them children and pregnant women. It is a disease that targets our future,” said Natasha Bilimoria, President of Friends of the Global Fight. “The Senate Working Group has the ability to strengthen and grow the U.S.’s strong leadership efforts to prevent and treat malaria, and Friends of the Global Fight looks forward to working closely with this influential group to help eliminate this disease around the globe.”
In addition to funding the President’s Malaria Initiative, the United States government has been the largest contributor to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria since the Global Fund’s inception eight years ago. Today, the Global Fund is the world’s largest financier of malaria programs, providing 60% of funding for malaria prevention and treatment programs worldwide.
In addition to Senators Feingold and Wicker, Friends would like to thank all of the original Members of the Senate Working Group on Malaria for their commitment to reducing the threat of malaria, including: Senators Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), Sam Brownback (R-KS), Dick Durbin (DIL), Johnny Isakson (R- GA), Edward M. Kennedy (D-MA), Patty Murray (D-WA), Jim Risch (R-ID), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Arlen Specter (D-PA).
