Ms. Derrick Brings Strong Track Record of Leadership and
Success to Bipartisan Efforts to Improve Health and Save Lives
Washington, D.C., June 6, 2012 — Friends of the Global Fight Against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria announced today that Deborah Derrick will serve as President, beginning July 16. Ms. Derrick currently serves as a Senior Program Officer in the Global Health Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
In her new role as President, Ms. Derrick will lead Friends’ work to educate, engage and mobilize U.S. policymakers and leaders in support of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the world’s largest public health financier. Global Fund-supported programs in 150 countries save 100,000 lives per month.
“Strong U.S. leadership and support for the Global Fund’s lifesaving work is essential to improving health worldwide — and contributes significantly to our own national security and economy,” said Jonathan Klein, Board Chair of Friends and CEO and Co-founder of Getty Images. “Deb’s impressive experience and heartfelt commitment to global health make her a stellar fit to serve as President. The Board of Directors of Friends is proud to welcome her.”
At the Gates Foundation, Ms. Derrick directed approximately $15 million annually in global health advocacy programming and provided strategic counsel to the organization’s senior leadership.
“Deb has played an essential role in the Gates Foundation’s efforts to ensure access to lifesaving health interventions where they’re needed most,” said Dr. Stefano Bertozzi, Director of HIV at the Gates Foundation. “The foundation strongly supports Friends and the Global Fund, and I’m pleased that Deb is bringing her skills, experience and dedication to such an important cause.”
Prior to her work at the Gates Foundation, Ms. Derrick was executive director of the Better World Campaign and worked as a senior advisor at the State Department and on Capitol Hill. She received her Master’s degree in Public Affairs from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics at Duke University.
“Friends and the Global Fund have made it possible for millions of people to become productive, to support their families and to have and raise healthy children,” said Ms. Derrick. “I’ve seen firsthand the transformative value of U.S. investments in global health and am eager to work with leaders on both sides of the aisle to ensure continued robust support for the Global Fund.”
