Executive Director of Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria to Serve Another Term
Washington, D.C., January 11, 2011 — At its 22nd meeting in Sofia, Bulgaria, the Board of Directors of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria agreed to extend the appointment of Dr. Michel Kazatchkine as Executive Director of the Global Fund for a term of three years. The decision was based on Dr. Kazatchkine’s successful performance since assuming the role in April 2007.
“Michel’s leadership has been instrumental to the growth of the Global Fund, an organization that has saved an estimated 6.5 million lives in less than a decade,” said Natasha Bilimoria, President of Friends of the Global Fight Against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, which advocates on behalf of the Global Fund in the U.S. “These successes have inspired a continued deep commitment from the U.S. government, which recently made an unprecedented three-year, $4 billion pledge to the Global Fund.
“The Board’s decision to extend Michel’s tenure is a testament to his expertise and decades-long dedication to the fight against these three deadly diseases,” Ms. Bilimoria continued. “I congratulate Michel and look forward to continuing to work closely with him to build on the tremendous strides the Global Fund has made.”
Dr. Kazatchkine has spent more than 20 years fighting AIDS as a leading physician, researcher, administrator, advocate, policymaker and diplomat. He has served both as Chair of the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) Strategic and Technical Advisory Committee on HIV/AIDS and as a member of the WHO’s Scientific and Technical Advisory Group on tuberculosis. In 2005, Dr. Kazatchkine was named France’s global HIV/AIDS and communicable diseases ambassador.
