CONGRESS PASSES FY2009 SUPPLEMENTAL APPROPRIATIONS BILL: INCLUDES $100 MILLION FOR THE GLOBAL FUND, TOTAL OF $1 BILLION IN FY2009
Friends of the Global Fight extends its heartfelt thanks to the U.S. Congress for including a contribution of $100 million for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria as part of its FY2009 Supplemental Appropriations bill. The Global Fund faces a funding gap of $264 million, and this additional funding will support some of the outstanding grants that have been approved by the Global Fund’s Board of Directors but not yet funded.
“Friends of the Global Fight and the Global Fund are grateful for the Congress’s efforts to include this additional funding, which will make a world of difference in the lives of many people affected by AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria,” said Friends of the Global Fight Executive Director Natasha Bilimoria. “Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Congresswomen Nita Lowey (D-NY) and Barbara Lee (D-CA), as well as Senators Richard Durbin (D-IL) and Patrick Leahy (D-VT) have been instrumental in securing this funding for the Global Fund.”
Created in 2002, the Global Fund is a critical tool in the fight against three devastating diseases: AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Together, these diseases kill six million people a year. With grants worth $15 billion in 140 countries around the world, the Global Fund invests in programs that work to prevent the spread of HIV, tuberculosis and malaria and treat patients with these diseases.
“This money is more than a contribution to the Global Fund, it’s also a call to other countries to help fill the Global Fund’s remaining need,” Bilimoria said. “Thanks to the U.S. government’s leadership, other G8 countries may consider further contributions when they meet at the G8 summit next month. We have just been given a great boost in our efforts to fully fund the Global Fund’s life-saving programs.”
